Guy Penrod Signs Recording Contract With Gaither Music Group

When Guy Penrod’s departed from the Gaither Vocal Band, there was a lot of discussion about the seemingly clean break he made from all things Gaither, which fueled questions about his post GVB relationship with the Gaithers.  Well, I’d say this press release will answer any still unresolved questions.  Guy has now signed an exclusive recording contract with Gaither Music Group.  Gaither Music will be picking up Guy’s current solo album Breathe Deep for release.  Congratulations to Guy, and maybe this will put the questions to rest.

YouTube Clip #15

Well, last week I booked a hotel room and got tickets for the Gaither concert in Greeneville, SC April 24th.  I’m really excited about seeing Mark, Michael, and David back in the Vocal Band again.  It’s been fun looking back at the old videos and seeing them sing together.  Here is a clip of the three of them plus Guy Penrod singing House of Gold.

Here is a clip in tribute to Guy Penrod and Marshall Hall together on the “Give It Away” DVD by the Gaither Vocal Band.  We’ll miss you guys!

Major Gaither Vocal Band Shakeup

The GVB has experienced a major upheaval.  Effective immediately, the Gaither Vocal Band consists of David Phelps, Wes Hampton, Michael English, Mark Lowry, and Bill Gaither.  Lowry will finish his solo dates currently booked in 2009 before joining the GVB full time.  Speculation has run rampant about the future of Guy Penrod and the GVB for some time, but Marshall Hall’s departure is unexpected.  Stay tuned folks, this is going to get real interesting.  Check out Gospel Music Update’s information here.

Your Top 10 SG News Stories of 2008: A Statistical Analysis

Several bloggers have posted their top 10 news stories for the past year, but I thought I’d do something a little different.  Here are the top 10 news stories on this blog, based on the number of views each post received over the past year.

  1. Matt Dibler Leaves The Inspirations
  2. Greg and Charlotte Ritchie Leave Jeff & Sheri Easter
  3. Dottie Rambo Passes Away
  4. Guy Penrod’s Sabbatical from GVB
  5. Jerry Ritchie Passes Away
  6. Bobby All Hospitalized
  7. GVB’s Lovin’ Life Track Listing Released
  8. Monument Quartet Changes
  9. Scott Rogers Departs Crossway
  10. The Segos Controversy

I find this to be quite an interesting list.  There are some surprising inclusions over glaring omissions here.  I would have expected Wilburn to have appeared here, and definitely the GV tenor swap.  However, by a quick count, Kitson’s replacement of Waldroup was down around #18, and I hadn’t even found the GC lead swap yet.  I think this provides an interesting look into what you, the reader, found to be the most interesting news stories.  Also, understand that I didn’t count non-news items (reviews, pure opinion posts, etc.) in this list.  Quite interesting, to say the least.

Guy Penrod Taking Time Away From GVB

Via Kyle Boreing’s blog, there is a press release on SGN that states Guy Penrod is taking “a few weeks” off from the Gaither Vocal Band.  According to the release, his part will be manned by a combination of Mark Lowry, David Phelps, and Jason Crabb.  Phelps really intrigues me, I wonder if he will actually sing Guy’s part and thus below Hampton, or will he sing tenor and Hampton drop down to the lead part?

Penrod is now the longest tenured member of the GVB apart from Gaither himself, so if anyone has earned a break, it’s definitely GP.  Best wishes to him for a nice, restful time away.  Those of you readers who happen to catch the GVB while Guy is away, report back here and let us know how “the replacements” work out.
