Top 5: Greater Vision on Greater Vision
October 21, 2011 19 Comments
I’m starting a new series of posts that are called Top 5 Artist on Artist. These posts come from me polling current and/or former members of iconic groups and asking them the best 5 albums ever released by said group. Up first is Greater Vision. All three of the current members responded to my request (thanks guys!), so without further ado, here are the top 5 Greater Vision albums as seen by the members of Greater Vision:
5 | Live At First Baptist Atlanta (2002)
4 | Everything Christmas (2010)
3 | Quartets (2003) | |
2 | Take Him At His Word (1995)
1 | Hymns Of The Ages (2006) |
I find a couple of things interesting. First of all, the similarity in all three responses is incredible. Out of a possible 15 slots for albums to be named, there were only 9 (and Gerald’s list had 6, as he had a tie for 5th). It really shows the unity and similarity in the way these three gentlemen think. Also, Gerald nailed the top 5. In order.
So what do you readers think? You’ve seen what the guys of Greater Vision think, do you agree?
As you know, I’m ranking all of my favorite projects on our blog, so I may be jumping the gun here.
But I think I have
1. It’s Just Like Heaven
2. Live at First Baptist Atlanta
3. Far Beyond This Place
4. 20 Inspirational Favorites
5. The King Came Down
6. When I See the Cross
I’m pleasantly surprised to see “Take Him At His Word” so high on the list. That has always been my favorite post-Trammell Greater Vision project.
I’m also impressed that they didn’t take the marketing route and name their new CD #1. LOL
Take Him at His Word barely made my Top 100, so I do like it. But I liked Serving a Risen Savior quite a good bit better from the Wolfe/Griffin/Allman configuration (we haven’t gotten to that one yet in the countdown). It was a more traditional and “safe” project I guess, which for a fan like me, can be a good thing. I can understand why Take Him at His Word might win more critical acclaim, or respect from artists themselves.
Brian, your 1, 2,3, and 5 all got votes from the guys. So you’re not too far off their list. 🙂
Brandon, good point! LOL
So we know that the five ranked above plus It’s Just Like Heaven, The King Came Down, and Far Beyond This Place got votes. Which was the 9th that got a vote? I would guess maybe On a Journey?
The Force is strong with you young Crout. Obi-Wan has taught you well. 😉
Well, that would have been my #7… 🙂
Who’s Obi-Wan? Is that some pop culture reference?
😀
YGG, take a Saturday with nothing to do, and rent/borrow a copy of the following movies:
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back….
that will explain the reference, then for the rest of the story watch:
Return of the Jedi.
😀
I love the idea Wes!! I hope you can get in touch with as many artists as possible.
I’m actually not that familiar with Greater Vision so I don’t have a list of my own to compare this to, but hopefully I will for some of the others!
I’ve got a couple of other groups with at least one response so far, several emails/FB messages out, and will send some more out soon. I think this is going to be really fun!
My top 3 are their 1, 3, and 5, in that order.
Great concept for the blog. I look forward to reading what other artist participate. I have a request though, the Kingsmen.
I LOVE GREATER VISION. THEY ARE ONE OF THE GREATEST SG GROUPS OUT THERE. I COULD LISTEN TO THEM SING ALL NIGHT ! I PLAY THEM IN MY CAR ALL THE TIME. RODNEY IS THE GREATEST SONG WRITER OF ALL TIMES. THEIR MUSIC MINISTRY IS SUCH A BLESSING. I ALWAYS LEAVE THEIR CONCERT FEELING SO UP- LIFTED. GREAT GUYS, AND GREAT MUSIC ! IF YOU HAVEN’T HAD THE PLEASURE OF HEARING GERALD SING, “OH HOLY NIGHT”, DO SO. IT WILL BRING TEARS TO YOUR EYES……..WOW………….
I don’t usually go out of my way to correct grammar, but I felt compelled this time. Rather than going into great detail, I’ll just provide a helpful link:

Duly noted and corrected. I shall retreat to a corner and hide my face in shame. 🙂
Great idea for a series, Wes! As far as the guys being in unity pretty well, I can see it now. Gerald sends from all three emails, but shakes it up just enough that it isn’t obvious. 😉 Just kidding, Gerald!!!
BTW, concerning “Hymns of the Ages”. is that the same one as this one? :
http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/richmedia/images/cover.gif It shows a different release date (which isn’t all that unusual).
Also, when searching, I found a cover for a third version If you do a Google image search, it should be the second picture. Are all of these the same CD?
