Recording Oops!: JD Sumner & The Stamps

I was listening to the album Sing Songs to Remember by JD and the Stamps a little while ago, and I noticed a little “oops” in the song “Jesus Is Coming Soon.”  On the second verse, Donnie Sumner is singing the pickups on the lead line with the rest of the quartet joinng him on the last couple of words.  On the last phrase of the second verse where the quartet comes back together,  I think the lyrics were a bit problematic for JD.  Donnie sings “Homeward we..” and the quartet joins for “..then shall fly, glory to share.”  With JD, if you listen closely, you’ll hear him sing “then shall fly, glrr..rrr…SHARE!”  🙂  Just something funny I head that I thought I’d share.  If you have the album, pull it up and listen.

I haven’t listened to that record in years, but if there’s an error, it won’t be the only time there’s been a snafu on a Stamps record.

Pull out the CD 20 Southern Gospel Favorites and give it a listen. If you can’t figure it out, let me know and I’ll clue you in on it!

Actually John, I don’t have that CD!

Also, on one with Strickland they are singing the song “Tell Me The Story Again” On the last word of the song, J.D starts on the “A” beneath middle C for some modern harmony before sliding down to a double low C. I should say he tried. He ended up closer to a Db I think. 🙂 Previously, he HAD hit a double low C with the same members on the end of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” except there he only slid from a low C. 🙂

Well, you need to find it, Wes!

Long story short . . . After the Stamps laid down all the vocal tracks, they left the studio and went on the road. The producer (who’s name I will hold in my heart) accidentially erased several of the vocal tracks. Knowing that the group wouldn’t be able to return to the studio, the producer sang those missing vocals.
