Hidden Gems: Cathedrals – “Poet’s Song”

This particular track comes from 1989’s I’ve Just Started Living, which produced the monster hit by the same title, as well as a couple of other popular tunes like “In The Depths Of The Sea” and “Look For Me (Around The Throne).”  Buried down at track 8 is this simply gorgeous ballad featuring Danny Funderburk.  The lyrics talk about how Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of anything you can think of, be it philosophy, wisdom, arts, or what have you.  There’s not a high ending, no high intensity bridge, but a simple and sweet melody that Funderburk sings with an ability that is unmatched.  In a lot of ways, this song musically is similar to “Whosoever Will” that Danny recorded on Travelin’ Live.  The rest of the Cathedrals (George, Glen, and Mark) provide some nice harmonies on the chorus, but this song really showcases Danny, and what made him one of the top tenors of that time period.  Pull out your CD and listen again.  Just try not to be impressed with the beauty of this song.
