Hidden Gems: Greater Vision – “The Spirit Of Brokenness”

I normally wouldn’t do consecutive hidden gem posts, but this is part 1 of a 2 part tribute to Jason Waldroup’s tenure with Greater Vision.   This song was on Jason’s debut mainline release with Greater Vision, The Shepherds Found A Lamb.  A gorgeous ballad with verses done by Gerald Wolfe as only he can, and tight, smooth harmony on the chorus by the trio with Jason taking the melody highlight this track.  The song doesn’t have any high harmony, in fact, it tends toward the opposite end with some fairly low harmony, but it is perfect for the subdued, reverent arrangement of the song.  The arrangement really highlights the lyrics, which are incredibly strong.  This has long been one of my favorite Greater Vision tunes.  Give it a listen and make it your prayer for the day.

Wes, I believe this is the song that on Greater Vision’s “Coming Home” video (Jason’s first with the group), Gerald told the story of the first time Rodney played the song for him, he had to stop Rodney because the song (paraphrasing here) tore him up so bad, that he couldn’t listen to it.

This is a perfect Hidden Gem, Wes. One of Greater Vision’s most under appreciated songs.

I LOVE this song!! I try to remember to sing it as a prayer at least once a month. The lyrics are awesome. I’m generally stoic, but thinking about the words to this song brings me to tears.

I’ve heard Gerald tell the same story about this song in concert.

The Shepherd’s Found A Lamb is probably my favorite GV project ever. It’s definitely in the top two.

You are right on. This is one of my top favorite GV songs. I happened to record it on TV one night years and years ago, and I never fail to be convicted and moved when I hear it.

This is an anointed song for sure. I have the Daywind soundtrack, but the demonstration is from studio vocallists, not Greater Vision. So unfortunatley, I’ve never heard them do it.

I bought the “The Shepherds Found A Lamb” project on eBay about a year ago and was blown away at the songs on it. I really like the title song and “Once And For All.” Of course two big Rodney songs are on there, including “If There’s No God” and Rodney’s personal favorite of all of his songs, “The Spirit Of Brokenness.” If you can find GV’s “Songs From The Stories” on eBay or from another source, that also has the same version of “Brokenness” on it, sung by GV. The demo singer/group on the Daywind soundtrack for this song is horrible!!!
