Hidden Gems: Cathedrals – “Whosoever Will”

Our next hidden gem is in honor of the re-release of the Cathedrals Travelin’ Live on DVD.  This song was never a hit song from this album for the Cats (that honor went to “Boundless Love” and to lesser extents “Homeland” and “Blood Washed Band”), but it’s tough to pick a stronger song than this one on the project.  This may be one of the best tenor vocals ever recorded in Southern Gospel music.  No flashiness, no power high ending, just the sweetest tenor singing on one of the most tender ballads you will ever hear.  In his prime, there was no one better than Danny Funderburk, and this song is Exhibit A.  What a simple, yet powerful lyric, that extends the simple invitation that “whosoever will may come to Jesus.”  Instead of high power harmony, this song derives its might from a thoughtful, heartfelt lyric and a passionate, emotional performance by Funderburk.  This may be the greatest hidden gem.  It’s awfully hard to beat.
