Another Dollar General Find

We stopped in Dollar General the other night to pick up some supplies and some cheap birthday cards (DG is a WONDERFUL place for greeting cards!) and while we were browsing around, I was looking through the CDs and DVDs.  Since I found the Johnny Cook CD a while back, I peruse the stacks everytime I’m in there.  Lo and behold, I found something else that was quite interesting.  Dollar General is selling a 6 volume DVD set of the Gospel Singing Jubilee.  These are not the Gaither issued DVDs, but are entirely different.  Here are the six volumes, I only found volumes 1 and 6 at my local store.

  • Volume 1 – The Florida Boys
  • Volume 2 – The Happy Goodmans
  • Volume 3 – The Cathedrals
  • Volume 4 – The Inspirations
  • Volume 5 – The Hinsons
  • Volume 6 – The Speer Family

I will have to say I was disappointed in the Florida Boys DVD.  After about the second or third song, the audio began lagging about a second behind the video, which made for some aggravating viewing.  However, this was not a problem on the Speer Family volume, and it was very enjoyable.  Hopefully my copy of the FB is just messed up.  Oh, the DVDs are very reasonably priced as well….2 for $10.  Gotta love DG prices!

Has anyone else seen these and/or picked them up?

Also, one of the Florida Boys cuts has a tenor I don’t recognize.  The song appears to be from the early 80′s, and the tenor is short, a little on the stocky side, and has dark, almost black hair.  It isn’t Jerry Trammell, it isn’t Terry Davis, and it doesn’t look much like Greg Shockley.  Anyone know who this tenor is?

Gaither Related Upcoming Releases

I was looking at http://www.newreleasetuesday.com the other day (thanks again to Daniel Mount for discovering this great site for me) and noticed several upcoming releases for Gaither and also the artists on his tour.

Of course the much anticipated Ernie Haase & Signature Sound “Dream On” CD and DVD are being released next Tuesday but also listed is The Happy Goodmans “The Final Stand” on CD and DVD which was originally released in 2001 (according to its Amazon entry).  I wonder if it is an identical re-release or if there will be some added footage and/or songs.  Christian comedian Chonda Pierce also has a release that day.

The much MUCH anticipated release of the Gaither Vocal Band’s reunion is hitting stores January 27th which sounds a lot better than the originally stated ‘late 2008′ date.  Jeff and Sheri Easter have a new release coming out the same day.  To my knowledge this will be the first with daughter Morgan at the soprano slot full time.

March 24, 2009 has Bill & Gloria Gaither’s Best of Homecoming Volume 2.  Volume 1 was relased 1997 and I was wondering if there was ever going to be a follow up.  Also a new CD by Lynda Randle and a Best of Volume 2 DVD.  They didn’t wait nearly as long for a Volume 2 for Lynda!

You Tube Clip

Well while we are waiting for Wes to fix his PC issues I guess I’ll make an entry. I guess that’s the benefit of having another contributer!

I was hoping to find a version of “Give Up” by The Gaither Vocal Band with Michael English on YouTube but instead came across this one. This is from the Video “50 Years The Happy Goodmans” and according to amazon.com was released in May of 2000. In the version featuring English on Southern Classics, he sings both verses. This version however, Penrod and Phelps split the duties and Phelps really makes it his own and pretty much “steals the show” but in a good way! It’s stuff like this that I miss from Phelps, which hasn’t been captured in his solo contemporary recordings. My goosebumps had goosebumps and I almost had a shouting fit here in my cubicle…and I’m a Baptist!

The video quality is on the grainy side but the audio is good.

Enjoy:
