Jason Waldroup has announced that he is leaving Greater Vision to pursue a seminary degree. You can read the press release here. Waldroup has never been one of my favorite tenors, but that is solely based on personal preference and is no reflection on his talent. Waldroup was a very solid tenor singer, and to his credit, he knew his range and did not try and stray from it. You have to have something going for you to stay with a top tier group like Greater Vision for 13 years. I wish Jason and his family nothing but the best as they begin a new chapter in their lives.
Several bloggers have mentioned the musical rut that Greater Vision seems to have been in recently, and like Brandon at Coomer Cove aptly states, I too am hopeful that with a new singer will come some new life into their music. It isn’t that Greater Vision’s music has been bad, far from it, but it just seems to have all sounded very similar over the past few years. I’ve only been privileged to see GV in concert once, and that was 10 years ago or more, so I can’t comment as much on their live concerts as the recordings I’ve heard recently. Hopefully they can get back to the days of albums like When I See The Cross or Far Beyond This Place. Best wishes also to Greater Vision as they begin the search for a replacement.
Saw GV last summer at a church in our area. Saw them up close. They are such a well-oiled machine. A real team. Jason was, and is an important part of what they do. He made all of their sound cues and adjustments. Did it very well. Was very subtle. Sang well. Solid, as you said.
Of course, Gerald’s talents and Rodney’s writing serve as GV’s main building blocks.
More than anything, these guys are the consumate christian gentlemen. What an asset for SG.
God’s very best to JW!
