This song came from Won By One’s debut recording around 1995 with the original lineup of Greg Shockley, Clayton Inman, and David Jenkins. This was a tremendous power ballad. It is constructed similar to the Perrys’ current song “Look No Further” in that it has several verses that are sung in succession before we hear the chorus. I love the lyrical juxtaposition of the line “… and God cried” as it is used in the verses to denote God mourning over the crucifixion to the chorus using the line as God’s proclamation of the resurrection. It’s these type of creative lyrics that are rare in the SG world. The performance is great, though I have always thought Shockley sounded better in the harmonies of the ensemble than he did singing solos. Still, his soaring tenor vocals leading from the last verse into the chorus drive home the emotion of the lyric very well. These guys just had a great blend, their voices meshed very well together. David Jenkins is an excellent writer as well, but is a very underrated baritone vocalist. He is extremely smooth and has great range, as is displayed on this song. After one chorus, the song modulates up a half step and the chorus is repeated and builds to an incrediby high ending. These are some of the strongest lyrics you’ll hear, and Won By One’s performance really drives them home. Find this cut and give it a listen, I imagine you’ll want to hit the repeat button when you’re done.
Hidden Gems: Won By One – “And God Cried”
January 9, 2008 by burkesbrainwork
Do you know where I can find the album, either CD or downloadable version of Won by One’s song “And God Cried”?
I used to have this back when I was a teen and loved it, I’ve been looking around but no one seems to have this anymore.
Anyway, if you know where I can find it I’d appreciate the help.
Thank you,
Jean
If you hit some local christian music and bookstores they can order it for you; or like my local christian store, they can create a soundtrack CD with only the one song on it (as though you were going to sing it in church). This type of cd usually has the song with vocals, without vocals, w/background, w/o background. That’s what I’ve done in the past when I really like a song but don’t neccessarily want the whole cd, or if it’s a hard-to-find cd. Hope that helps!
Is Won by One still recording and doing appearances and how can I find their CD’s. I saw them some years back and I absolutely loved them. They came to our church and I would love to hear them again.
Won by One has been reformed and is currently working in the studio on 2 projects. They should be available in early fall.
Karen, Won By One split up several years ago. Your best bet on finding their music is to check out eBay and Amazon. I know that Amazon still has several of their CDs available.
